About this program

Poultry production, also known as poultry farming, is the act of raising domesticated birds such as native chickens, broilers, turkeys, ducks etc for the primary purpose of meat production and eggs. Poultry farming is a significant contributor to the global food supply, providing meat that is very rich in protein, and also eggs. The earliest evidence of poultry farming (domestication of wild birds, _Gallus gallus domesticus_ ) dates back to ancient civilization, originating from Southeast Asia (present-day China, India) also in Egypt and Rome about 8 000 years ago. It became more commercialized in the 19th century with the development of new breeds and feeding practices. And has become a popular practice now with the introduction of vaccines, antibiotics and advanced technology. Poultry farming entails a whole lot of practices including; * Breeding and hatching. Birds are bred to produce eggs, and eggs are hatched to produce day old chicks * Brooding. Young birds are kept in warm, enclosed environment to promote growth and development * Growing and finishing. Birds are transfered to larger space where they are fed and cared for until they reach market weight * Egg production. Hens called layers, are kept in specialized buildings or cages where they produce eggs. Poultry farming provides meat and eggs which are rich in essential nutrients. It's also a good source of employment. Challenges that could be encountered in poultry production include; disease management, environmental impact.
